Hajj Guide: Step by step guide

How to Perform Hajj

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that every financially and physically able Muslim must perform once in their lifetime.

Hajj is performed during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, especially from the 8th to the 13th days.

Hajj is required for adult Muslims who are:

  • Physically capable
  • Financially able
  • Mentally sound
  • Free to travel safely

Ihram is the sacred state entered before beginning Hajj. Pilgrims wear special simple clothing and follow specific rules.

The main steps are:

  1. Enter Ihram
  2. Perform Tawaf around the Kaaba
  3. Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah
  4. Stay at Mina
  5. Stand at Arafat
  6. Spend night at Muzdalifah
  7. Stone the Jamarat
  8. Sacrifice an animal
  9. Shave or trim hair
  10. Final Tawaf

Tawaf is circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.

Sa’i is walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.

The Day of Arafat is the most important part of Hajj. Pilgrims pray and ask Allah for forgiveness at Mount Arafat.

Pilgrims throw stones at the Jamarat to symbolize rejecting Satan and evil temptations.

After completing Hajj, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha and pray for acceptance of their pilgrimage.

During Ihram, pilgrims should avoid:

  • Cutting hair or nails
  • Using perfume
  • Fighting or arguing
  • Hunting animals
  • Wearing stitched clothes for men

Hajj teaches equality, patience, sacrifice, unity, and devotion to Allah.
